THE PLOT
Are you Game To read it?
Grand Odyssey's origin lies approximately a year after Gilgamesh's Ascension. Since becoming a veritable god within the game, Garret Merlin set out on his best attempt to make a foolproof plan to claim power far beyond the confines of a simple video game. Step one was straightforward, it was just a matter of becoming literal god of Grand Odyssey. Simply paying off some unsuspecting, simple-minded creators to gain the proprietary rights of the video game. Promising them to re-brand it into something simply out of this world.. A promise he had every intent of fulfilling to the last word.
A handful of months passed and advertising for GRAND ODYSSEY ONLINE, "Are you game to rewrite history?" Would take the world by storm. "Oh my god, Becky. Look at that gold." "Duuuude, this is going to be all the rage." Chants almost, would echo through every street as civilization itself would pause in preparation for the release of the next big thing. The next giant leap in gaming technology, as advertised on the flier which would be in the hands of whoever wanted one. The same flier which spoke fantastic tales of an island being crafted from scratch a few kilometers off the coast of Japan. An island which would, "bring your wildest dreams to life." Grand Odyssey, the dream of one man.. The nightmare of a million.
As both the island and the game entered their final stages of completion, beta testing had become enabled. A few players whom had been granted beta testing rights had been on the island, nameless individuals. Scrap metal as far as the world was concerned. Guinea pigs who finished serving their purpose were all discarded, as it was the only right they had left.Time eventually passes in its agonizing glory and the day of the grand opening arrives, at the very release date of the video game itself. Gamers flock aboard the ferries which escort them to the captivating locale. Grand Island now opens its gates.
The last of the ferries departed, leaving the players stranded on an island far from civilization in any direction. The impressive crowd which clustered around a grandiose pedestal, upon which stood the, mortal for now, man. "Welcome one; Welcome all!" He began, his voice echoing through to the farthest reach of the masses, every ear drum rumbling to the same frequency, as though his voice resonated from the island itself. "To Grand Island!" The long awaited welcome was met with resounding applause which rustled every blade of grass in the vicinity. Silence suddenly cast over the crowd as Garret Merlin would strike out his arms, the wide welcoming grin on his face contorting into a far more serious gaze. "The games have already begun." The serious look twisted once more into a sinister scowl as their darkest days loomed over the people's head as though they were lambs to the slaughter. After many moons of diligence, it was at this very point that the cogs started moving, the countdown had begun.. The Grand Master was now ready to conduct his orchestra. "Mind you, this is not just a simple game; Grand Odyssey has now consumed you, THE GAME IS YOUR LIFE!" As confusion filled the air and disarray settled with every little panicked member as they looked amongst each other, alarmed at his declaration. "I believe i owe you an explanation." The rustled crowd somehow already knew they had no more hopes other than within him, thus they listened. With intent.
"Grand Island, is just that. A majestic island city, a great view topped off with every and any resource to satisfy the basic needs of anyone from a visitor to a long-term resident. We offer you the internet speeds folds faster than any second place would be competitor in the world. You'll need it, after all. With all the servers and 'VR' systems we're running concurrently, anything short of redefining what it meant to be best would not have been enough. When a simple stroll out the house allows you to have every bit of your wildest dreams within one fell swoop, isn't my utopia a greater wonder than paradise?" He cheered the crowd on, once glum faces now astounded by his words. Sheep never really made good skeptics.. His tone turned sour, "There is one last thing separating my dominion from Heaven itself." The crowd hushed again, riding the emotional roller coaster Garret's words took them on. "From sentient beings to dead leaves.. Every last one of you is connected to GRAND ODYSSEY ONLINE!" Opening his arms wide, as though a concert conductor hitting the climax of a masterpiece. Unleashing his work upon the unsuspecting millions.
"Upon your registration with the city, you will be housed in your new, moderate home. With all your necessities met and all your wants dignified. You'll be pampered to the bone, having your every last desire satisfied. But of course, nothing lasts forever. Once you meet the level requirements, your grace period is halted. Level 20, that will be when the real game starts." Some players grew weary, others brightened up like a spring morning. Though, the general consensus still remained silent and intent on listening.. It was as if he was already their god. "Level 20 onwards, your entire existence will be determined by your standings within the game. The money you make, the properties you own, your influence and power within the game itself. Hell, even whether you live or die. It will all be directly dictated by your capacity within the game itself. Though, do be warned. Families are highly not recommended." His canines dug into his flesh, as if he savored the next statement he was about to make, the quiet crowd stricken with fear. "Human life by nature is a fragile one.. That quality will only be accentuated by the design of the game itself." They were too afraid to revolt even after a statement like that; he really was their god. "I've put up an official rules/guidelines notice within every housing quarters, so that can be addressed as it comes up. So, let's take a chance to talk about the game itself.. Or should i say, the game's most key aspect. The Grand Odyssey!"
The hardcore gamers were already sinking their teeth into the context of the game, scheming their ways to possible notions of victory while the fairly regular crowd just kept their heads down, in hopes of not losing their lives. Garrett, admiring the cult he had just begun from his perch which at that moment felt as though it was atop the entire world. Looking down at his very own congregation with the cockiest grin curling around the egde of his lips; the minute hand this doomsday clock ticked forward. "THE GRAND ODYSSEY, it is the infinity gauntlet of sorts for this game. Any player who obtains this item will immediately be awarded an Odyssey tier gear specific for your class. The fun doesn't end there, whoever acquires THE GRAND ODYSSEY will be granted Mayorship of Grand Island.. Indefinitely." The sudden glint in every player's eyes. From the E1337 to the casual, everyone finally had perspective on the grand prize of absolute power. "There is however, like everything else on this island you'll come to find, a catch." A cruel grin accentuated by the rush of power which surged through his veins as he would assert the powerful grip he had upon the lives of the millions who were present. "I currently wield THE GRAND ODYSSEY. And i would like all of you to know, i have every intention and motivation to figure out how to extract this power into the real world and become the god of everyone out there, just like how all of you have already acknowledged me to be. Don't like the thought of becoming my slave? Then show me the best heretic in you." A chuckle ripped through the masses, sending a shiver down each and every spine as he revealed his truly insane plans.
The first domino had been knocked over, his plan set in motion. He turned towards the gates to cut the ribbons to the city. Players flooded the gates without a moment's hesitation; not wasting a second of probably the final moments of their lives, bringing themselves up to speed with the ongoings and logged themselves into the system.. Except for one, the very last player to log on to the servers had his head crushed by the VR headset he put on. Life lost as a message to be sent by Garret, as the whole Grand Odyssey world would bare witness to the final entry of a corpse. Letting everyone else know just how fragile life in this world really was. He had created a survivalist world, where every man needed to be out for himself. Except Garret had one knowledge no one else did, not a soul on this land could match his power..
And what a blissfully ignorant soul he was, having no idea that you are coming. The lot he could not have possibly accounted for, the divergence in his almost picture perfect formula. There is a new Epic of Gilgamesh being forged and you are the anomaly who truly can rewrite history.. So, are you game?
